Small story – several years back I stumbled on a web site for a Croatian record company called Kopito. That happens to be my last name. When I contacted the company thinking that the owner had that name, they said no, that just stands for our logo which was a horse’s hoof. Which fits into my uncles explanation that the name Kopito loosely translated to “blacksmith” in Polish.

(My father was born in Poland but came to the US when he was 7 years old – may have been around 1920 and part of one of the many waves of European Jews emigrating to the US. My mother was born to Russian/Jewish immigrants and was first generation American.)

Then, while poking around on Google Maps, my wife discovered a town in Croatia called “Kopito” – right outside of Sarajevo. Another connection.

We may be closer than you think! 🙂

Jeff, what a wonderful story.

To make things even more interesting – my husband’s family come to the US as part of the Russian Jewish immigrant wave of the late 1800’s.

What can I say, we are all much closer than we think.
Best,
L.
